A Beginner's Guide to Bluffing
Casual gamers, indeed even non gamblers, are aware of the basic concept of bluffing in Poker. It has become part of everyday language, and yet the fact is that a lot of Poker players do not know how to use it properly. If you are new to Poker, it is something that you will want to learn quickly.
Today there seems to be two perspectives on bluffing in Poker. There are those who believe that it is the ultimate strategy, and on the other side are those who say it is the single most overrated tactic in Poker history. The truth is somewhere in between.
Regardless if it is Texas Hold'em, Omaha or Stud Poker, bluffing is a legitimate Poker strategy, but it should be used only in certain situations.
Some of the ideal times to use bluffing in Poker include the following situations.
If you are going to bluff for the first time in a money game, it is best if you attempt it with a small pot at stake. This has two advantages. Number one, you will not lose a lot of money in case you fail, and second, it is more likely the other Poker players will fold.
The reason of course, is that if they have weak hands, then there is nose sense allowing the pot to get bigger. Their line of thinking will be to might just as well fold.
It is also important to look at the cards on the table and make sure that there are no strong draws there. Of course this cannot be done with any certainty, but often, you will be able to judge from player reaction if there is a strong card there.
Another good time to bluff in Poker is when everyone else has checked except you. This will tell you that their hands are most probably weak, and it is a good time to call. Also, you do not need any complex mathematical equation to tell you that the fewer players in the game, the greater chance your bluff will work. Having too many players increases the chance someone will call.
Having stated all that, it is important to also know when not to bluff. This includes the time when you are playing against tourists and fish and when there are too many players still in the game. it is also not a good idea to bluff when the pot is large, because it is unlikely that the others will just fold.
A final advice on bluffing in Poker: your image will become crucial in how often you can pull it off. If you come across as a frequent bluffer, the other players will remember. They will no longer respect your calls and you will be caught. It is therefore important not to get carried away and overdo it.
Bluffing in Poker is a skill that is easy to learn but difficult to master. It comes with constant practice and of course, experience. It
is all right if you falter in the first few times, because that is part of the game. Simply take it in stride, and learn from it. Soon, you will become an adept and use bluffing like the pros.
