Flush Down to the High Card
Flush down to the high card are the lower ranks of poker hands. Check out these combinations for you might be holding it during your next poker game.
Let us say that poker legends Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan picked on each other to play poker before proceeding to the World Series of Poker. They refused to find a poker room instead they settled on a makeshift poker table to play poker. There were no poker chips employed for they used actual money directly for the betting. Nothing fancy.
In the first round, Johnny Chan won the pot with a flush ten, seven, six, four and three of spades. It was a practice game for the big World Series of Poker tournament so it was okay if the pot was small.
In the second round, Doyle Brunson was jubilant over beating Chan's straight poker hand with a flush. A straight poker hand is composed of cards in sequence although not of the same suit. The deciding round was disappointing because both Brunson and Chan tied with two flushes each sharing the same high cards.
In cases of two flushes, top cards are compared. Whichever player has the highest top card wins the pot. If the top cards are the same for both players, the second top cards are compared. If the second top cards are the same still, it will go down to comparing the third top card until the fifth card as the case may be. Whoever gets the highest top card wins the pot.
If at the end of the third round, Doyle Brunson poker hand was made up of jack, ten, eight, five, three of hearts, it beats Johnny Chan's poker hand which was a jack, nine, seven, six, four of spades.
Granting that there was a fourth round and Johnny Chan has a three of a kind while Doyle Brunson has a straight, Brunson's straight outranks Chan's three of a kind. If Johnny Chan only has a two pair and Doyle Brunson has a three of a kind; the three of a kind beats two pair.
You have a three of a kind if you have three cards of the same denomination like three jacks and two cards that is not a pair. If the other two cards are a pair such a poker hand is called a full house.
Below the three of a kind poker hand is two pair followed by one pair and lastly the high card.
